I found a recent news story interesting because I was just writing a piece on impending copyright issues related to GenAI for my “Let’s Get Strategic” column in Information Today.
The makers of Star Wars’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are being sued over the use of Peter Cushing’s image. The use of the image occurred back in 2016—long before generative AI, or GenAI, hit the scene—but I’m sure GenAI and its sudden popularity had something to do with the renewed interest. (more…)

As we enter 2023, I can’t help but notice lots of commentary about what we can expect on a variety of fronts, including marketing. As I think about marketing in 2023, a few things spring to mind, maybe because I was doing a lot of reading about them during the last week or so of the year while I was enjoying some downtime. But, I see three key trends for 2023: a continued focus on local marketing, disruption from ChatGPT, and increasingly sophisticated use of data and analytics.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely seen as a game changer in how our world operates, both now and especially in the future. With any revolutionary change, there are often both strong advocates and vehement detractors. Much of that polarization comes from the fact that major societal disruptions often have both winners and losers. Take globalization as an example. While an increasingly interconnected global economy with more open trade has meant cheaper prices for consumers in developed nations, it has often also meant that employees in some sectors are displaced as industries move to countries with lower costs of production. A Harvard Business Review case study recently posed a provocative question: when should humans listen to algorithms vs. when should they trust their own experience and intuition? For this case study, the issue related to which of two employees to choose for a promotion. But, given the widespread applications for the use of big data and the power of predictive analytics, the question could be applied to any field or area of business practice—including content marketing.
