Have you ever pulled up a company webpage on a smartphone and immediately been asked if you’d rather load the content on the company’s app? It seems like businesses of all sizes have gone app crazy over the last several years. Google Play currently hosts 2.6 million apps and the App Store is not far behind with 2.1 million.

About 10 years ago, in June 2005, Apple began supporting podcasts through iTunes and the rest, as they say, is history. The popularity of podcasts has ebbed and flowed since then-most recently flowing as popular programs like Serial, NPRs Fresh Air and the TED Radio Hour attracting masses of listeners on a regular basis. Nielsen data supports what most already know: apps are in. In fact, their research indicates that, in the U.S., Android and iPhone users 18 and older spend 65 percent more time on apps today than they did just two years ago. How much time? On average, it adds up to 30 hours and 15 minutes a month.

Pew Research recently released their State of the News Media 2015 report, which includes some interesting information on the impact of mobile. Consumers are increasingly consuming content via their mobile devices—even long-form content. Google’s ongoing algorithm changes and a growing trend toward the use of mobile have advertisers and marketers wondering whether their content will continue to resonate in smaller mobile formats.
The jury is still out, as they say, but the question is a valid—and evergreen—one these days. (more…)
